….so while we’re doing the unfortunate over at Leeloo, stay inside where it’s warm, steep yourself a nice a cup of tea, pop your slippers on and shop online (no-one judges your tracksuit pants there) where you can bag some awesome brand new goodies in store now. New labels include Scotatto, fun is cool, Shona, Box of Glory and betsy blonde.
Hope Street Markets is this weekend - don’t forget to head along!!! Featuring some of Leeloo’s labels, it’s sure to be a huge winner at the new venue.
We’ll talk more soon…..hopefully with less boxes in our immediate vicinity.
The world is a better place because of pretty things. Often these things are made on beautiful bits of paper. One of the best ways to find something beautiful on paper is to purchase a hand-made gift card, gift tag or stationery set created by the utterly gorgeous Jess of truth.be.told.
Jess has recently graduated as an architect, but at Leeloo, we think life might have other plans for her! For all of your lucky lovelies that live in Melbourne (or are there on said dates!), you can head along to see her at some upcoming local markets, including the designers treasure trove at Rose Street (see flyer above for dates and details). Make sure you also say hi to Cat Davison when you’re there!
Our buddies over at Two Flat Whites are into finding, nurturing and exposing fine Aussie talent in a similar way to us here at Leeloo, in the vicinity of “fashion, design, music, entertainment, politics, food, film, news of the day & just about anything in between!” Cool, right?
Well….it just so happens that they are having their very first birthday! To celebrate, they’re giving away a bundle of cool bits, starting with albums by The Paper Scissors(above) and Bluejuice. These two awesome Aussie bands are in the process of a nation wide tandem tour, with dates all over the place (check their MySpace pages for deets). Head over and check out their web site for their Mega Month of May Giveaways and get involved in the artistic and creative community like you always wanted.
Tomorrow (May 7th) the Palace cinemas in Paddington and Norton St Leichhardt begin their annual Spanish Film Festival. An annual treat for lovers of good foreign movies, this year proves to be no different with an incredible line-up.
The festival opens with the critically acclaimed Seven Billiard Tables as part of a spotlight on films featuring the gorgeous and talented Maribel Verdú.
The programme also includes the finest features in Spanish language movies from the genres of romance, comedy, documentaries and animation from the past year, including The Biggest Flower (shown above).
Who can pass watching a bunch of hot Spanish people in films (Including the gorgeous Gael García Bernal in Y Tu Mama Tambien?!)

Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art are celebrating the art of the Zine this coming May with two great events. The first is a Zine Masterclass, on Sunday 11th May, 1pm-5pm, costing $30 (or $25 for MCA Members & concessions).
Attendees will learn the art of making your own personalised zine, and includes speakers such as Glenn Barkley, Keg de Souza from Squatspace, Penny Modra and Stuart Geddes from Is Not magazine, academic Anna Poletti, Luke Sinclair from Sticky Institute, Raquel Ormella and Regina Walter from the Flaps project, and the indomitable Miss Helen.
Appropriate for brand new and experienced zinesters, participants are encouraged to make their own zine to bring along to the MCA Zine Fair on 25th May. It’s free to attend, runs from 11am to 6pm, and if you wish to have a stall to exhibit and sell or trade your own zine, submissions are still open. Otherwise simply head along to check out the plethora of ziney talent on the day, check out the bands or get involved in one of the panel discussions. It’s all good.
PS. Don’t forget Leeloo has MixTape Zine in store if you’re interested in finding out what they’re about…..it’s a great way to start and an awesome read!
RSPCA are having their annual Million Paws Walk on Sunday May 18th, (for Sydney it will be held at The Overflow, Sydney Olympic Park) with over 70 locations Australia wide involved. The hugest fundraising event each year for this necessary institution means that you and your four legged friends can head along and raise money together by participating in the walk itself. Head along for displays on pet care, showbags, products for sale, competitions, prizes, free advice from vets, seminars from experts, live music, BBQ, jumping castles and a playground.
This years walk also features for the very first time, the 2008 National Service Dog Trials, featuring dogs from law enforcement and the military battling it out for position of top dog in obedience, drug and explosive detection and offender apprehension.
Pre-register online at www.millionpawswalk.com.au to save around $5 per person for the cost of being involved, and start getting sponsors. Registration is also available on the day from 8am, for $17. If you can’t make it, help out by grabbing some of their merchandise or sending a donation, however small, all of which can be done on the same web site
For those of you who haven’t seen the new RSPCA advertising campaign, it is truly controversial, but will hopefully drive the anti-cruelty message home. People need to understand the link between animal cruelty and violent behaviour towards others. We all need to take care of those who cannot defend themselves.
